SR99, Mercer St. closures in December

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has announced weekend closures on state Route 99 and Mercer Street over the next three weekends as part of the Mercer Corridor Project. Full weekend closures will occur the following weekends in December:

•Friday, Dec. 6, through Monday, Dec. 9 (SR 99 only);

•Dec. 13 through 16 (SR 99 and Mercer Street); and

•Dec. 20 through 23 (Mercer Street only).

These closures will provide for completion of critical Mercer Street widening and SR 99 bridge replacement work to allow for construction of the SR 99 Bored Tunnel’s North Portal in June of next year.

The work is weather-dependent and may be canceled and rescheduled for later dates if inclement weather occurs.

SR 99 will fully close to traffic beginning Friday, Dec. 6, at 11:59 p.m. to Monday, Dec. 9 at 5 a.m. as Mercer Corridor Project crews shift traffic from the western side of the SR 99 bridge over Mercer Street to the newly constructed eastern portion of the bridge.

During the closure:

•SR 99 will be fully closed to traffic between Valley Street and the southern end of the Battery Street Tunnel. Traffic traveling through Seattle via SR 99 will be directed to Interstate 5 in northern Seattle at North 85th Street or in southern Seattle at East Marginal Way and Spokane Street. (More information about alternate routes during construction may be found at www.seattle.gov/transportation/mercercorridor.htm.)

•Mercer Street, Broad Street and the I-5 on- and off- ramps at Mercer Street will remain open during the weekend work.

•Pedestrian access will be maintained on the south side of Mercer Street between Fifth and Dexter avenues North.

SR 99 and Mercer Street will fully close to traffic beginning Dec. 13 at 11 p.m. to Dec. 16 at 5 a.m for demolition of the western portion of the SR 99 bridge over Mercer Street.

During the closure:

•SR 99 will be fully close to traffic between Valley Street and the southern end of the Battery Street Tunnel. Traffic traveling through Seattle via SR 99 will be directed to I-5 in northern Seattle at North 85th Street or in southern Seattle at East Marginal Way and Spokane Street. (More information about alternate routes during construction may be found at www.seattle.gov/transportation/mercercorridor.htm.)

•Mercer Street will fully close to traffic between Fifth and Dexter avenues North. Traffic heading east toward I-5 from Queen Anne will detour to Harrison and eastbound Broad streets at Fifth Avenue North and will reconnect to Mercer Street at Ninth Avenue North to continue toward the I-5 ramps at Mercer Street.

•The sidewalk on Mercer Street will also close between Fifth Avenue North and Dexter Avenue North. Pedestrians will detour to Broad Street.

•Broad Street and the I-5 on- and off-ramps at Mercer Street will remain open during the weekend work.

On Dec. 20, Mercer Street will fully closed to traffic beginning Dec. 20 at 11:59 p.m. to Dec. 23 at 5 a.m. so crews can remove the old foundations of the western half of the SR 99 bridge.

During the closure:

•Eastbound Mercer Street will fully close to traffic between Fifth and Dexter avenues North. Travelers heading east from Fifth Avenue North should take Harrison Street to eastbound Broad Street to reconnect with Mercer Street at Ninth Avenue North. (More information about alternate routes during construction may be found at www.seattle.gov/transportation/mercercorridor.htm.)

•The sidewalk on Mercer Street will also close between Fifth and Dexter avenues North. Pedestrians will detour to Broad Street.

•Westbound Mercer Street, Broad Street, SR 99 and the I-5 on- and off-ramps at Mercer Street will remain open during the weekend work.

Early warning signs will be available in advance of the SR 99 lane restrictions and Mercer Street detours. Travelers can expect significant traffic and delays and should plan ahead and use alternate routes.

Access to Seattle Center from I-5 on Mercer and Broad streets and from SR 99 will open through the weekend.

Additional weekend closures will continue over the course of the project, which is scheduled for completion in mid-2015. Closures are coordinated with other construction projects and special events in the area, including activities at the Seattle Center, and will be announced as dates are confirmed.

[Editor's note: SDOT announced on Tuesday, Dec. 3, that the last weekend of closures, Dec. 20 through 23, has been canceled. The project team has determined that the road work could be completed during the first two planned weekend closures.]
